"The Andover OPMH CMHT recently held a Tai Chi ‘taster’ Session facilitated by Jane Launchbury and Patrick Foley of Longwater Tai Chi, based in Downton.

The event was held on 9th September for staff. It was an opportunity for the team to try out the various techniques of Tai Chi and QiGong (pronounced chi gung), a system of internal self-healing exercises… in slow motion, and to experience their benefits.  The introductory session ran for an hour and, whilst team members were initially sceptical, the session ended on a ‘high’.

The positive feedback we had from all who participated certainly highlighted the benefits they received.

Staff comments:

“I finished the session feeling much calmer”

“I felt very energised”

“I really enjoyed it”

Team Manager, Lizanne Forrest-Wilson said “We would strongly recommend this as an excellent use of the teams’ time to focus on improving our own well-being and therefore benefiting our service users”.

Jane Launchbury already works closely with the Alzheimer’s Society in Salisbury and our team members here at Andover believe that Tai Chi would benefit service users and carers.  The exercises are gentle and can be chair-based, an important factor to consider for our client group

The Andover team are now looking to introduce Tai Chi to their Therapy Groups so that service users and carers can have the opportunity to experience it’s benefits."
